I currently teach SOLO courses throughout Alaska, work as the Education Director for the North America Outdoor Institute, and teach Avalanche courses throughout the state.

My ongoing passion for outdoor expeditions and international travel has seen me hike the Appalachian Trail, work for Outward Bound in Maine, volunteer yearly at a clinic in the Dominican Republic, and to guide high altitude expeditions through Field Touring Alpine in Nepal and Ecuador. On any given spring weekend I can be found ski patrolling in Tuckerman’s Ravine. I yearn for the telemark turn in deep powder, good coffee and tasty beverages….all amidst friends.

I am also a trip leader, climbing instructor and LNT instructor for Squeaky Wheel Adventures, a Maine based outdoor environmental camp for foster kids. I am currently working with my friend Chandra Ale, owner of Initiative Outdoor, a Nepal based mountaineering, trekking and outdoor education company. With SOLO’s guiding hand, Chandra and I hope to develop Nepals first SOLO certified wilderness medicine courses for aspiring Nepali guides in training.

DESCRIPTION: I’ve been hooked on experiential education since first working with at-risk youth in 1995, hooked on outdoor education since first teaching the J-stroke in 1997, and hooked on wilderness medicine since first watching a coworker impale his head on a tree in the Adirondacks in 1998. Along with over a decade of “working” outdoors for various organizations, I have taught for SOLO since 1999 (my favorite era of which was spent living on the incomparable SOLO campus). I now spend lots of time outdoors with my husband and two young children, looking forward to hiking the Long Trail end-to-end as a family in the next few years. Other time I spend teaching street EMTs for the University of Vermont and volunteering as an EMT-Intermediate with the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad. I’m particularly interested in endurance sports and technical rescue, and my favorite part of teaching for SOLO is hearing about all the fabulous outdoor jobs SOLO students have managed to score.

Back in Africa I head up SOLO’s pioneering efforts there and have taught courses in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya, with exciting new ventures developing steadily. Every second year the need to recertify my EMT, and reconnect with the world of SOLO, brings me back to a White Christmas, travel and teaching adventures. I have also done relief work in Haiti.

DESCRIPTION: I am a freelance consultant offering solutions in the area of Public Safety and Social Compliance in Istanbul. I have worked with AKUT, the Turkish organization that handles both search and rescue in the wilderness and response to natural disasters since the late 1990s. I got my first SOLO training in 1999-2000. I love being outside, mostly diving and camping. I used to climb, but I am feeling older and getting busy these days, so I have to be satisfied with sitting around the occasional campfire.

The ripple effect of that first course, both personally and professionally, continues even today. As a traveling ʻambassadorʼ for SOLO, it is exciting to see students of all backgrounds unite around the common table of ʻpatient careʼ in becoming backcountry samaritans.
